Often when creating art my approach is loose and unplanned, mostly I am just responding to my own materials and marks. Like a game of chess, I go back and forth until there are no more moves to be made. I enjoy incorporating "failed" works or old work that didn't quite work into new works. (I hope that made sense) Interaction is important to me. Whether it be how humans interact with each other, animals to nature, or how my material interacts with my canvas; there is always a dialog happening and I intend to capture it as often as I can through my work. Much of my work is just me spilling and turning out my subconscious into a physical representation. Automatism is a great way to find yourself, but first you must get lost!

If ever you are going to be distracted, try to make it a happy distraction.
In a world full of stressors, pressures, time constraints, and expectations, sometimes it can feel like too much. I often feel the need to distract myself from the things I should be doing with the things that I want to do, or I would rather do. Making art, gardening, hanging out, reading, and testing out a newly learned recipe just to name a few. Without balance, it is not a realistic or productive way to live, the tedious chores, obligations, and financial responsibilities will never get done but it is a great way to be distracted when feeling overwhelmed with the unpleasant day to day realities. The term Distracted by Happiness has changed for me over time, but in a nutshell it's a positive way of thinking and a way of giving allowances to spontaneity. It is important to allow time for the 'in the moment' moments despite our perceived obligations. Distracted by Happiness is about giving ourselves the time and ability to bring joy to ourselves and to others. It's all out there for grabbing and I intend on grabbing all the distractions of happy I can. Through my art I can work to invoke this idea. I like to draw and paint whimsical and colorful imagery, made up creatures, new places and things that tell a story of hope, love, and good times. I am not blind to all the negativity, violence, corruption, injustices, pandemics, shitty politics, hate, and all the other crap that keeps us up at night, in fact I am highly aware and sensitive about many things but sometimes I just rather be Distracted by Happiness. Distracted by Happiness is an alternative to being miserable, I can control my state of mind if nothing else. I invite people to look at my art, through my art they can see my state of mind, it's sometimes surreal and nonsensical, but it is mine. And if you stare long enough maybe it’ll all start to make sense. |
